Substitute game parks for zoos

The tragic death of Tatiana the Siberian tiger in the San Francisco zoo has stimulated some high-level thinking in Silicon Valley about zoos without borders. In conservancies, animals can do what comes naturally: fly, roam, forage, choose a mate, and consort with their own kind. They’re free, happy, living full lives rather than existing as bored and frustrated specimens in showcases. Many people are investigating how the zoo here can capitalize on the endless miles of open spaces in Northern California and create homes for the animals similar to Sonoma’s Safari Land and the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park.
*A couple of exceedingly prominent tech princes want to see this happen in a big way. “Places like Lewa in Africa have shown how to manage wildlife in open spaces,” one said, “so we wouldn’t have to invent the wheel here.”
